Walking and cycling connections between Weston Creek and Woden are being improved with three projects set to be delivered.
The three projects are:
- three-metre wide off-road shared path from the intersection of Heysen Street and Hilder Street, through the Oakey Hill Nature Reserve, ending at the intersection of Devonport Street and Derwent Street.
- on-road protected cycle path along Devonport Street between Derwent Street and the Lyons shops.
- off-road shared path from the underpass near the Lyons shops, along Launceston Street to Burnie Street.
Construction of the three projects will be staged.
Construction is now underway on the off-road shared path from the intersection of Devonport Street and Derwent Street, through the Oakey Hill Nature Reserve, along Heysen Street, ending at its intersection with Hilder Street.
In addition to the off-road shared path, this project will deliver:
- safer road crossings
- a safe interface of walkers, cyclists and equestrian users
- 29 LED lights installed along the route.
Start date: August 2020
Expected completion date: late 2020
A number of road closures will be required to facilitate these works throughout the expected four months of construction.
Heysen Street has been closed between Hilder Street and Devonport Street since mid-August. It was due to open in early October however due to the wet weather experienced in the week of 5 October 2020, the closure has been extended for approximately two weeks, including bus detours. Roadside signage and this page will be updated to ensure road users and the community are kept updated on it reopening.
Following the reopening of Heysen Street, temporary lane closures will commence on Hilder Street between Heysen Street and Martens Street for approximately four weeks (weather permitting). These were due to commence on 12 October however due to the extension of the closure of Heysen Street, these lane closures have been pushed back. One lane will remain open at all times. Access to properties and for local residents will be maintained at all times however there will be restricted access for road users and detours will be in place. Please note the footpath on the western side of Hilder Street will also be closed to pedestrians during these works.
The second section to be completed will be the off-road shared path from the underpass near the Lyons shops, along Launceston Street to Burnie Street. This project is being delivered under the ACT Government's Fast Track Program.
Expected start date: late 2020
Expected completion date: early 2021
The final section to be delivered will be the on-road protected cycle path along Devonport Street between Derwent Street and the Lyons shops. This project is fully funded under the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Expected start date: early 2021
Expected completion date: mid 2021
