Green waste sorted

For a one-off fee of $50, residents in the designated program suburbs who want to participate will get a 240 litre lime green lidded bin (same size as the recycling bin) and a fortnightly pick-up service.

Green bin services may be available for apartments and townhouses. If you have your own red and yellow bins you can register directly online. If you have a shared waste service, talk to your strata or body corporate manager or visit our multi-unit development page to find out more.

You can still apply for a green waste bin if you are renting, however the green waste service is registered to the property address and must remain with the property, even if you move.

If you move and the new property does not have a green waste bin, you will have to register and pay again.

A one-off registration fee of $50 will be required at the time of registering, with your green waste bin collected every fortnight. Concession card holders with one of the below concession cards will receive their green waste bin for no charge.

Residents will receive their bin within 5 working days of registering.

Green bins will be will be collected on alternate fortnights to the recycling bin service.

All residents in the ACT who currently have their own domestic yellow (recycling) and red (rubbish) bins are able to register for a green bin (garden organics).

The garden waste from the green bins will be collected from the kerbside and transported to a green waste facility for processing into mulch.

Composting garden waste reduces greenhouse gas emissions by decreasing the volume of organic waste sent to landfill.

No. Food scraps must not be placed into your green bin.

Your green bin is for garden organics only which includes:

  • garden prunings
  • leaves
  • grass clippings
  • weeds
  • small branches (no longer than 45cm and a diameter of 10cm)
  • flowers.

The following items are unsuitable for your green bin:

  • syringes and medical waste
  • stumps and logs
  • plastic bags (this includes biodegradable bags)
  • construction materials
  • food (including fruit from trees)
  • sawdust and ash
  • animal waste
  • timber
  • rocks
  • soil
  • garbage waste
  • recyclable waste
  • bricks.
