Love Food Hate Waste
Love Food Hate Waste is a pilot program delivered by ACT NoWaste that aims to raise awareness about food waste and encourage residents to find ways to avoid it.
Why are we trying to reduce food waste? In the ACT around 26,000 tonnes of household food waste goes to landfill each year. Reducing food waste:
In Australia, 34% of food waste in the supply chain and 74% of the food waste in landfill has come from households.
The ACT Government has been licensed to base the program on the internationally successful Love Food Hate Waste campaign. The campaign is also delivered by the Victorian and NSW Governments, Brisbane City Council and other places across the world.
Food Organics Collections for the ACT
The ACT Government is exploring options to deliver a food organics and garden organics (FOGO) service to ACT households by 2023.
Love Food Hate Waste and a future FOGO service for Canberrans will complement each other. Love Food Hate Waste will help us all take simple steps to make sure the only food we are throwing away are the peels and the scraps. A FOGO service will take the food we can’t avoid throwing out and turn it into other, more valuable products such as nutrients to improve soil quality.
