Explore Canberra bike paths and lanes

Cycling in Canberra

Canberra has an excellent network of shared paths, on road bike lanes and relatively quiet neighbourhood streets which make cycling safe and accessible for all ages and abilities. Many paths follow routes that cannot be seen from busy roads making them more pleasant and sometimes more direct. Use maps and wayfinding to help you plan your trip, and if you are new to riding in Canberra check out our helpful links below.

This page has information about out how to use public transport with a bike, where you can park and how to share roads and pathways.

Taking your bike on public transport

Bikes on buses

Over 90% of Transport Canberra buses are equipped with bike racks which each hold two bikes. Bike racks on buses are available on a first come, first served basis. Watch our video to see how to use a bus bike rack or refer to the instructions (PDF 156 KB).

Fold up bikes should be folded prior to boarding and stored out of the way in the luggage rack or on the floor. Please note Transport Canberra is not liable for any damage, wear and tear, loss or stolen bikes and staff may refuse carriage of a fold-up bike for safety reasons. See our bikes on buses policy (PDF 132KB) and information about safety and conditions of use.

Bikes on light rail

There are four bike racks in each light rail vehicle available for customers to use. For further information on which types of bikes can be brought onto the light rail, and conditions of travel with bikes, visit CMET.

Parking

Park your bike

Bike rails are available across the city and at a number of bus and light rail stops. Bring a lock so you can secure your bike and continue your journey on public transport.

Transport Canberra manages six secure bike cages which are accessible using your MyWay card. To apply for access email your MyWay card number and preferred cage location to myway@act.gov.au. You will have access within five business days.

The ACT Government is not liable for any loss or damage to items stored in bike cages, lockers or on rails. For further information see our bikes on buses policy (PDF 132KB)

For a map of bike rails and cages see the Bike & Ride map.

Safety and road rules

Safety is everyone’s responsibility so let’s look out for each other whether we are walking, cycling, scooting or driving.

Some road and path users are more vulnerable than others and sometimes safety is a matter of perception. Is there anything you can do to make other people feel safer, particularly older people and parents of small children?

In general everyone on the path should aim to:

  • be predictable
  • look out for each other, particularly our most vulnerable
  • know the rules
  • be seen and heard.

See our guide to sharing roads and paths for more information.

Infrastructure improvements

The ACT Government uses data to inform future improvements to Canberra’s walking and cycling network. You may have noticed the bike barometer on MacArthur Avenue in O'Connor which counts the number of cyclists and displays this information online. Data can be downloaded from the ACT Government’s Open Data Portal.
