Roadside Memorials in the ACT

A policy on the placement of roadside memorials in memory of those in the community who tragically lose their lives on our roads was introduced in the ACT in September 2010.

In recognition of the emotive nature of roadside memorials, the ACT Government has adopted a formal policy to ensure a consistent and sensitive approach. This had the support of the majority of the community who participated in a community consultation.

The policy outlines that the views of residents living adjacent to any proposed roadside memorial should be sought first. In the event of conflicting views, the ACT Government will facilitate discussions to identify a suitable location and type of roadside memorial.

The policy also specifies that while roadside memorials can remain indefinitely, they need to be maintained in a tidy and safe condition.

Roadside memorials can consist of a small floral display, a ground plaque or a small structure no greater than one metre high.
