Bagasse
Bagasse is a pulp-based cardboard-like compostable material made from sugar cane fibres. It is not accepted in ACT household recycling or green waste bins.
Bagasse is often used as an alternative to plastic packaging and food service ware. Bagasse products can be disposed of in rubbish bins in the ACT or by some commercial composting services.
Disposal options
- Avoid all single-use products where possible
- Home compost – chop or shred the Bagasse first
- Businesses – check with your commercial composting contractor to see if they accept bagasse products
- Contact Capital Scraps Composting to see if they collect compost in your local area
- Use ShareWaste to connect with others seeking waste for compost
- Rubbish bin
Additional information
The Canberra Environment Centre runs workshops on composting and sells a range of composting systems at a reduced price.
Why?
While these products are made from renewable materials which is better than oil-derived plastics, they often require different disposal facilities. Our Materials Recovery Facility that receives the contents of your recycling bin does not accept and recover items for composting. These items often need to be composted in a commercial compost facility with specialised conditions such as optimal temperatures, insects or enzymes to break down large volumes of this material, or they will go to landfill.
