Bagasse and sugarcane pulp products
Products made from bagasse or sugarcane pulp should be placed in your general waste bin. They are not accepted in ACT household recycling, green garden waste or FOGO bins.
Bagasse is a fibrous material left behind after harvesting sugarcane or sorghum. It is used to make packaging products that are used as an alternative to plastic packaging and food service ware.
Even though some of these items might look like cardboard, they are not. They are not recyclable and need to be composted at an industrial composting facility.
Disposal options
- Avoid single-use products where possible.
- Place in your general waste bin.
- Businesses can check with commercial composting contractors to see if they accept these products.
- Items marked with the AS 5810 home compostable logo can be placed in your home compost. Break into small pieces first.
Why?
These products cannot be recycled in the same way as plastic or cardboard and need to be composted. Our Materials Recovery Facility that receives the contents of your recycling bin does not accept and recover these items for composting.
