Bamboo and plant-based products
Products made from plant-based materials such as bamboo or wood pulp have increased in popularity as we move away from plastic items.
Although bamboo and plant-based products are made from renewable sources, they are still single-use items that must be disposed of correctly to avoid contaminating other waste streams.
Disposal options
- Avoid disposable products if possible
- Home compost in small quantities
- For commercial organic collection services contact:
- Rubbish bin
Why?
While these products are made from renewable materials which is often better than oil-derived plastics, they often require different disposal facilities. Our Materials Recovery Facility does not accept and recover compostable items. These items often need to be composted in a commercial compost facility with specialised conditions such as optimal temperatures, insects or enzymes to break down large volumes of this material or they must go to landfill.
Additional information
Single use plastic cutlery and stirrers (including bioplastic cutlery and stirrers) are prohibited from sale, supply or distribution within the ACT from 1 July 2021. Consider using alternatives such as reusable plastic, metal or compostable cutlery. Find out more about the single-use plastics ban.
