Coffee grounds
Coffee grounds should be placed in your general waste bin. However, there are more options that offer better environmental outcomes such as composting or worm farming. Coffee grounds cannot go in ACT recycling or green garden waste bins.
Disposal options
- Home compost bin, bokashi bin or worm farm
- Can be used in gardening as a fertiliser or pest repellent
- If you are participating in the Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service then you can place coffee grounds into your FOGO bin
- For commercial volumes, contact one or more commercial waste collections contractors to discuss available organics collection options that suit your needs
- Place in your general waste bin.
Additional information
- The Canberra Environment Centre provide information on composting and sell a range of composting systems at a reduced price.
- Visit the Everyday Climate Choices website for more information on composting.
Why?
When coffee grounds are sent to landfill, they decompose without oxygen. This produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. It also wastes valuable nutrients and energy that could be reused.
