Coffee pods/capsules
Coffee pods/capsules cannot be recycled in your recycling bin as they are a mixed material product and are too small. Coffee pods/capsules can be disposed of in the rubbish bin, however, there are many options that offer better environmental outcomes.
Disposal options
- Nespresso brand aluminium coffee pods can be recycled through the Nespresso Coffee Capsule Recycling Program. Find a free public collection hub location near you via the TerraCycle® location map
- TerraCycle® has partnered with various other coffee brands to create recycling programs for used pods:
- Paper coffee pods can be placed in the compost bin or rubbish bin. Do not place in the recycling bin as the coffee grounds inside the paper will contaminate the recycling stream
- Other brand aluminium coffee pods are to be placed in the rubbish bin
- Other brand biodegradable or compostable coffee pods can go in your home compost or rubbish bin. Do not place in the green waste bin.
Why?
Coffee pods cannot be recycled at our Materials Recovery Facility as they are too small and contaminate the recycling stream. Consider other types of coffee alternatives to avoid these single use products going to landfill, such as reusable pods, espresso, French press, or percolator.
