Paper
Most paper can be recycled in ACT recycling bins. 'Absorbable' paper (e.g. tissues, serviettes, paper towel), waxed paper (e.g. baking paper, paper ice-cream tubs), and receipts are not recyclable and must be placed in the landfill bin.
Disposal options
- Reuse paper for craft, drawing and notes
- Recycling bin (small contaminants like a staple are ok)
- Scraps of paper smaller than a credit card or shredded paper can't be recycled but can be composted
- Absorbable paper and waxed paper must go in the landfill bin
- Receipts are not recyclable and must go in the landfill bin. To help avoid this waste stream, some retailers and supermarkets now provide an option to sign up for digital or emailed receipts.
Why?
Paper is a valuable recyclable material but only when it is clean and large enough to be sorted and baled at our Materials Recovery Facility. Receipts, absorbable paper, thermal receipts and waxed paper contaminate the paper recycling process and are often made from very short fibres which are not high enough quality to be recycled.
