Pillows
Pillows in good condition can be reused or repurposed and must not go in the recycling bin.
Disposal options
- If in reusable condition, give to a friend, donate to charity, or sell online.
- Upcycle old pillows into throw cushions or floor cushions for your home.
- If made from natural fibres, pillows can be composted in your backyard compost.
- Contact businesses or charities that accept and resell pillows in good condition, such as:

- ACT Buy Nothing
- Ys Buys Donations Depot (decorative and throw cushions only)
- Salvation Army (decorative and throw cushions only)
- Another Chance Op Shop (good condition sleeping pillows, as well as decorative and throw cushions only)
- Contact preschools or childcare centres to see if they can repurpose pillows for naptime or play.
- Drop off for free at Goodies Junction at:
- Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre
- Mitchell Resource Management Centre
Note: only pillows in good condition may be considered.
- Place unusable pillows in the landfill bin.
Why?
Most pillows contain fillings and coverings made from synthetic materials, flame retardants and potentially harmful chemicals, including polyester fibres and polyurethane. These materials make pillows difficult to recycle, which is why it’s important to explore reuse or proper disposal methods.
