Asbestos is a hazardous waste. The law requires you to engage a licensed asbestos removalist to remove asbestos from your house or business. Do not dispose of asbestos in recycling, garden waste or general waste bins.

Asbestos contamination in coloured sand products - November 2025

If you believe you may have the potentially contaminated coloured sandproduct in your home or business, including any arts or crafts made with the sand, to prevent dust or fibres from becoming airborne do not disturb or use it and isolate the product and follow the guidance from WorkSafe ACT.

Small quantities of asbestos can be taken to the Mugga Lane and Mitchell resource management centres for no cost. When disposing of asbestos at resource management centres in the ACT:

  • Material must be double wrapped in 200-micron (min) plastic and sealed (taped up).
  • Plastic packages should be no larger than 800 mm x 800 mm and weigh less than 250kg.
  • Packages must be identified to facility operators at the weighbridges on arrival at the Resource Management Centre.

Disposal options: Domestic quantities

For quantities no larger than 800 mm x 800 mm and weighing less than 250 kg.

This service is free for non-commercial operators. No appointment is required for non-commercial loads. Fees apply for commercial operators.

Asbestos loads from commercial sources, and domestic loads greater than 250 kg or larger than 800 mm x 800 mm, are only accepted as commercial loads and charged accordingly.

Commercial loads are accepted only at the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre on appointment by contacting Remondis on 6270 7700.

Prior approval for disposal is required by completing the Asbestos Disposal Form and submitting it to Remondis 2 days before delivery.

The disposal yard at Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre is open from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm weekdays only.

Why?

Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause serious respiratory disease. Asbestos is harmful to people and the environment if not disposed of correctly.
