Vacuum cleaners
Vacuum cleaners must not go in your household recycling bins.
Disposal options
- For working machines, drop off for free at The Green Shed at:
- Contact a business who specialises in the repair of vacuum cleaners:
- Cordless vacuums contain a battery, which is classified as hazardous waste at its end of life. Removable batteries can be recycled through the B-cycle program, while embedded batteries that cannot be removed should be dropped off at the hazardous waste area at the ACT Government Resource Management Centres:
- As a last resort, they can be placed in your landfill bin or dropped off at a Resource Management Centre (fees apply).
Why?
At this stage, Australia does not have a national recycling scheme for electrical appliances as a whole. The existing scheme covers TVs and computers while specific programs exist for mobile phones and printer cartridges. Currently at the end of their life, vacuum cleaners must be disposed of in landfill.
