Children’s car seats
It is recommended that a child car seat should not be used if it is more than 10 years old, has been in a severe accident, or if the seat has cracks, other damage or frayed straps.
Before you use a second-hand child car seat, check that the car seat meets Child Restraint Evaluation Program (CREP) criteria. These include (correct as at February 2019):
- meets AS/NZS 1754, version 2004, 2010 and 2013
- has not been in a crash
- is not more than 10 years old
- has all its parts and that any buckles work smoothly
- has no splits or cracks
- has straps and harness that are not frayed, worn or damaged
- has an instruction booklet.
A child car seat that does not meet all these criteria it should not be used and is best disposed of. Fees apply.
