Solar panels

Territory is working within a multi-jurisdictional working group to develop a national stewardship approach, and improve recovery and recycling arrangements for photovoltaic solar system panels. Currently there is little recycling infrastructure for solar panels in Australia.

Disposal options

Why?

Solar panels contain valuable materials such as aluminium, glass, copper, silicon and rare metals such as silver, tellurium and indium that can be recovered and reused to reduce demand for mining raw materials. Solar panels can also contain hazardous substances such as cadmium that ideally should not go into landfill.
