2025 has been a busy year for our crews out maintaining our city. Over the next few editions of the weekly maintenance report we will highlight some of their work over the year.
Over the Christmas period many of our crews will be out and about completing their work across the city.
Some highlights this year include:
mowing 21,917 ha of grass during the first six months of the 2025/26 mowing program
planting over 5,000 trees including 1,941 native trees
replacing 10 shade sails at playgrounds
processed 1,854 tree activity applications
removed over 2,000 tree stumps
spread 2,230 m3 of playground mulch across 66 local playgrounds
watered 61,360 trees.
We also work in partnership with community groups and our youngest generation in planting activities, in 2025 this included:
730 trees planted with 15 community groups
418 trees planted with 14 schools for Shade our Play
841 wattles gifted to Schools on National Wattle Day (1 Sept 2025).
In addition to this, CED delivered a program of capital works which included:
executing more than 40 contracts to deliver activities such as feasibility studies, design work and construction stage work
releasing over 60 tenders to market to procure consultants and construction contractors to deliver services
approving more than 40 project plans for new initiatives to get projects up and running with many having completed initial phase of procurement or currently out to market.

The weather forecast this week is mostly sunny.Our planned works are outlined below. They are subject to weather and any required operational changes.
General updates
Bin collections: The following suburbs will have bins collected on Saturday 27 December 2025 instead of Thursday 25 December 2025: Aranda, Bruce, Dunlop (south of Ginninderra Drive), Evatt, Florey, Giralang, Hawker, Higgins, Holt, Kaleen, Latham, Lawson, Lyneham (north of Ginninderra Drive), Macgregor, Macnamara, McKellar, Page, Scullin, Strathnairn and Weetangera. Bins scheduled for collection on Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day will be collected as per normal.
Christmas and summer holiday closures:
The Mugga Lane and Mitchell resource management centres are closed on Christmas Day, Thursday 25 December 2025.
Namadgi visitor centre, Tidbinbilla visitor centre and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve are closed on Christmas Day, Thursday 25 December 2025.
Library branch operating hours will be adjusted across December 2025 and January 2026. For more information see Libraries ACT.
During the December/January holiday period, construction contractors will temporarily pause working and resume works in early 2026.
Road closures near EPIC: Sections of Flemington Road, Federal Highway, Phillip Avenue and Stirling Avenue are closed on Saturday 13 December 2025 for the Spilt Milk music festival. See road closures for more information.
Road safety: Please drive safely over the holiday period. Remember that double demerits are in force in the ACT from Wednesday 24 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026.
ACT parks and reserves: Ecologists are undertaking priority threatened species monitoring activities and field surveys to prepare for Ngunnawal cultural burns which will take place in 2026 and 2027 at Kama Nature Reserve.
Lakes, ponds and waterways: Bargang beach is closed for swimming due to a bacteria alert. For a full list of swimming areas and their status see water quality.
Mowing: Mowing is underway in Latham as well as ad hoc mowing around shops and other public areas.
Roads and paths: Crews are undertaking:
litter picking on Baldwin Drive, Benjamin Way and Southern Cross Drive
street sweeping at Belconnen town centre, Emu Bank, Hawker shops and Kippax shops.
Sportsgrounds:
Crews are fertilising the grass turf at Hawker Softball Centre, Holt district playing fields and Higgins neighbourhood oval.
Works to upgrade the facilities at Jamison enclosed oval have commenced with demolition of part of the old pavilion to make way for the upgrades. While works are underway, alternative infrastructure will be made available, including temporary toilets, changerooms and potable water supply.
Trees: Crews are undertaking:
planting in Giralang and Kaleen
pruning and removals in Dunlop and Kaleen
watering in Dunlop, Higgins and Holt.
Weeds: Crews are:
removing invasive Broom plants from parks, reserves and green spaces
spraying late season serrated tussock sites that were recently reported
controlling weeds across Canberra Nature Park reserves targeting African lovegrass, St John’s wort and woody weeds on windy days
Mowing: Mowing is underway in O’Connor and Turner as well as Black Mountain Peninsula, Canberra Avenue and Fairbairn Avenue.
Rabbit control: Feral rabbit control works continue in Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve and Mount Majura Nature Reserve involving a combination of shooting and harbour treatment. Works also continue at City Hill and Grevillea Park until Wednesday 31 December 2025. Signage is in place to advise reserve users of activity and restrictions.

Trail repair works continue along the Spring Range section of the Canberra Centenary Trail to address safety issues and repair damaged drainage structures. Signage is in place where the team is working.
Nadjung Mada Nature Reserve: Construction works are continuing until the end of the year on upgrading Old Well Station Road at Nadjung Mada Nature Reserve. The works are designed to upgrade the existing fire trail for active travel, access, exercise and leisure activities while also including restoration work and animal crossings between the 2 offset areas of west Kenny and Nadjung Mada.
Rabbit control: Work is underway at Amaroo, Forde, Ngunnawal and Nicholls until Wednesday 31 December 2025. Signage is in place to advise reserve users of activity and restrictions.

Ecologists are undertaking annual condition monitoring of Natural Temperate Grassland threatened ecological community in the southern grassy valleys of Namadgi National Park.
Ready-Cut Cottage accommodation is closed until further notice for maintenance and repairs.
Red Rocks cliff in Bullen Range Nature Reserve is closed for rock climbing until Wednesday 31 December 2025 for the Peregrine Falcon breeding season.
A trapping and baiting program for feral pigs in Rob Roy Nature Reserve will continue until signs of fresh pig activity have subsided. Signage is in place at specific sites to notify reserve users of the presence of bait. The bait toxin (sodium nitrate) is targeted specifically to pigs and is non-toxic to humans, wildlife and domestic pets.
Namadgi visitor centre, Tidbinbilla visitor centre and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve are closed on Christmas Day, Thursday 25 December 2025.
Infrastructure projects:
Athllon Drive duplication:The speed limit on Athllon Drive between Drakeford Drive and Vosper Street may be reduced to 40km/h at certain times until the end of February 2026. Check the travel impacts page for updates.
Sulwood Drive pavement rehabilitation: The pavement rehabilitation works under the east section are progressing well with the road planned to re-open this week.

Mowing: Mowing is underway in Gordon, Greenway and Oxley.

street sweeping at Tuggeranong town centre and the shops in Calwell, Chisholm, Erindale, Kambah, and Wanniassa.
Sportsgrounds: Crews are:
line marking the athletics tracks in Banks, Calwell and Kambah
top dressing, fertilising and re-seeding Kambah oval (note the Kambah works are due to be completed in February 2026 to allow new grass to establish after renovation work).
Trees: Crews are undertaking:
planting in Isabella Plains
pruning and removals in Gowrie, Kambah and Monash
watering in Calwell, Fadden, Greenway, Kambah and Wanniassa.
ACT parks and reserves: Ecologists are undertaking field surveys at Callum Brae Nature Reserve to prepare for Ngunnawal cultural burns which will take place in 2026 and 2027.
Arterial roads are litter picked approximately every 4 weeks. Main roads are also regularly inspected within this period to identify and program the removal of larger litter items.
Barbecues are cleaned twice a week between September and April and once a week for the rest of the year.
Graffiti is removed within 5 business days of being reported and within one business day if offensive. To report graffiti please go to Fix My Street.
Lakes and waterways adjacent to town and district parks are checked for litter each week. Urban lakes and ponds are litter picked a minimum of 5-6 times a year. Reports of excess litter or illegal dumping are prioritised for removal as soon as possible.
Playgrounds are routinely inspected and maintained as follows:
district playgrounds (e.g. Lake Ginninderra) which are inspected twice per week
central community playgrounds (e.g. Crace) which are inspected every week
local neighbourhood playgrounds (e.g. Duffy) which are inspected every fortnight.
Public land around shopping centres is routinely cleaned as follows:
town centres (e.g. Woden) and group centres (e.g. Dickson) are cleaned daily
local shops (e.g. Fisher) vary in cleaning from daily to 3 times a week.
Public toilets are cleaned at least once daily. Additionally, reactive cleaning and maintenance is undertaken as required.
Trees under 3 years of age in non‑irrigated areas are generally watered monthly from November to April.
