Our staff are continuing to work hard to support the Canberra community on this issue and we thank you for your respect and kindness.

The ACT Government takes safety on our road network seriously and encourages all road users to share responsibility for their safety.

Following two years of unprecedented rainfall, there was damage to our road network. In 2022-23 the ACT Government invested $153 million dollars over four years in road maintenance funding as part of its Strategic Road Maintenance Program. Dry weather conditions in the latter part of 2023 allowed the backlog of potholes formed during La Nina to be rectified. We are now repairing potholes as they are reported or identified on the road network.

Periods of consistent or heavy rainfall may cause an increase in damage to our road network. Please drive safely during these wet conditions. We are continuing to prioritise identified road maintenance issues to address concerns as they are raised. You can report road maintenance matters via Access Canberra or through Fix My Street. Such reports help to quickly identify and respond to concerns.

Claims

The ACT Government is not automatically liable for damage caused by potholes on its roads and will not meet claims where it is not liable. The ACT has an extensive road system and it is not possible for it to know where every defect is located at any given time, or to undertake repairs immediately. Persons who sustain damage are free to seek their own legal advice if their claim is not accepted.
