Pedestrian and Road Safety Improvement Program


Current update

The ACT Government is planning to deliver road and pedestrian safety improvements in Kambah and Watson in 2026. A table summarising the planned improvements and where they will be delivered is below.

Project description

The ACT Government is committed to Vision Zero – that means no deaths or serious injuries on our road transport network. As part of this commitment, the ACT Government is committed to delivering road infrastructure safety improvements under the Pedestrian and Road Safety Improvement Program.

Traffic safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists will be delivered in 4 suburbs listed below.

Deakin

Safety improvements at the Adelaide Avenue and Hopetoun Circuit intersection in Deakin were completed in October 2025. Ramps on both sides of the intersection (Yarralumla and Deakin sides) have now been improved for a safer crossing for pedestrian and cyclists. This project was jointly funded under the ACT Government and Australian Government Pedestrian and Road Safety Program.

Kambah

The ACT Government is planning to deliver road and pedestrian safety improvements across Kambah in 2026. This includes new refuge islands, lane width reductions, asphalt speed humps and permanent speed limit reductions. Permanent speed limit changes

A change in speed limit to 50km/h has been identified to increase safety on a number of streets. There will be temporary signage in place ahead of time to notify of the upcoming speed limit change.

Once the permanent speed limit signage is installed, the new speed limit will be in effect.

These works are jointly funded under the ACT Government and Australian Government Pedestrian and Road Safety Program.

Street Safety improvement
Atkins Street Reduction in lane width and a reduced speed limit to 50mk/h for the length of the road. At the Atkins Steet/Livingston Avenue intersection the left-turn slip lanes will be removed and the road narrowed on approach to the intersection.
Livingston AvenueReduction in lane width and a reduced speed limit to 50km/h for the length of the road.
Inkster Street Reduction in lane width and a reduced speed limit to 50km/h for the length of the road.
Mannheim StreetReduction in lane width and a reduced speed limit to 50km/h for the length of the road.
Summerland CircuitUpgraded kerb ramps, path connections and a reduction in lane width including a reduced speed limit to 50mk/h for the length of the road.
Vosper StreetReduction in lane width and a reduced speed limit to 50mk/h for the length of the road. At the Vosper Street/Livingston Avenue intersection the left-turn slip lanes will be removed and the road narrowed on approach to the intersection.
Barritt StreetReduction in lane width and a reduced speed limit to 50mk/h between Kambah Pool Road and Boddington Crescent.
Boddington CrescentSpeed limit reduction to 50mk/h for the length of the road, new asphalt speed humps, refuge islands, path connections and a reduction in lane width.
O'Halloran CircuitSpeed limit reduction to 50mk/h for the length of the road, new asphalt speed humps, refuge islands, path connections and a reduction in lane width.

O’Connor

Installing a pedestrian crossing on Bauhinia Street. This will improve cyclist safety along the main cycle route connecting Belconnen to the City. These works are funded under the Road Safety Program.

Watson

The  safety improvements in Watson will be constructed in 2026. Another update will be provided before construction starts.

Street

Safety improvement

Knox Street

Reduced speed limit to 50km/h, streetlight improvements, new pedestrian refuge islands, new asphalt speed humps, path improvements, bus stop relocation and a reduction of lane width which encourages people to slow down.

Aspinall Street

New cyclist warning signs.

What you need to know

To complete some of the works there will be temporary impacts to some residential driveways. If your driveway is expected to be impacted during the works, you will be notified ahead of time.

Permanent speed limit changes

The speed limit on Knox Street will be permanently changed from 60km/h to 50km/h.

In early 2026, temporary signage will be in place ahead of time to notify of the upcoming speed limit reduction.

Once the permanent speed limit signage is installed, the new speed limit will be in effect.
