Road safety improvements at intersections and section of roads
Roads ACT uses a ranking system to assess the need for, and priority of, improvements at intersections and section of roads. This system takes into account all fatal and injury crashes as well as property damage only crash types which have a more than a 5% casualty rate. The system then weights the severity of all crashes of these particular crash types to determine an overall ranking.
The top 300 intersections and 150 section of roads locations ranked on this basis are continuously monitored over two and seven year periods. This ensures that trends over time, as well as any recent increasing trends, are identified.
This ranking system is updated every year, and the top ranked intersections and section of roads form the basis for projects which are considered for improvement under this program.

The Federal Government also sponsors a road safety program - the Black Spot Program. A different crash criterion is used to identify projects for funding under the Black Spot Program.
