Role of the Cemeteries and Crematoria Regulator
The Cemeteries and Crematoria Regulator (the Regulator) regulates cemetery and crematorium operators in the ACT and provides information on burial and cremation options to the public. The Regulator aims to provide a financially sustainable model for the management of cemeteries and crematoria that recognises, and provides for, the diverse needs of the Canberra community.
The functions of the Regulator are:
- to administer the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2020 (the Act); and
- any other function given to the regulator by this Act or another territory law.
Complaints and enquiries to the Regulator
Please attempt to resolve the issue with the cemetery or crematorium operator directly.
If this is unsuccessful, or you are unhappy with the outcome, you can lodge a complaint or an enquiry through the Regulator via email (listed below).
Please assist us with handling your complaint or enquiry by including:
- a summary of the issue
- the name and location of the cemetery or crematorium operator; and
- the action or outcome you are seeking.
Please send all relevant attachments with your complaint or enquiry, for example, photographs and any correspondence you have had with the operator, including attempts made to resolve the issue.

Medical referees
Medical referees are appointed in accordance with section 41 of the Act. Current medical referees are listed below:

Report on missing ashes at Norwood Park Crematorium
In June 2019 Transport Canberra and City Services released the results of an investigation into lost ashes (PDF674.1 KB) at the privately operated Norwood Park Crematorium. Three cases of missing ashes were investigated as part of the process. The investigation looked into what had occurred between affected families and Norwood Park, the process used to search for missing ashes and Norwood Park's processes and procedures.
