Active travel improvements

Page last reviewed 05 Apr 2024

Project description

Canberra is home to a comprehensive network of walking and cycling routes that make it easier and safer for people to travel actively throughout our city. We want people to choose to travel actively. Active travel improves health and wellbeing, reduces the prevalence of chronic diseases, creates accessible communities, and increases the social and economic prosperity of a community.

The ACT Government manages and maintains approximately 3,190 kilometres of community paths across Canberra. Each year improvements and maintenance activities are carried out across the network. This includes adding new connections and upgrading existing connections as needed.

Community path improvements

Improvements are delivered through a range of programs in addition to packaged path improvements including road upgrades, Age Friendly Suburbs Program and the School Safety Program. We also improve active travel through public space improvements in parks, playgrounds and at local shopping centres.

Members of the public can request upgrades to existing paths or missing links. The ACT Government use a warrant system to confirm and prioritise requests.

The warrant system assesses whether a safe path can be provided for all path users. Safety, real and perceived, is always identified as a major barrier to active travel. If the safety criterion is met, 4 assessment criteria are applied to prioritise the requests.

  • Strategic: how the request completes the routes identified in the ACT Strategic Cycling Network plan or town/group centre master plans which outline the priority improvement corridors, connections to the proposed surrounding network and its value within the network.
  • Community: proximity to community trip generators and attractors within residential areas, such as schools, shops, facilities, businesses and parks etc.
  • Public transport: proximity to relevant public transport facilities to increase the possibilities of multi-modal trips.
  • Demand: presence of desired lines or expected demand for a path, i.e. more compact developments are more conducive to active transport and public transport.

These requests are inspected within 10 business days and then categorised by either an immediate repair or longer-term repair. In some cases, a defect will have both an immediate repair and longer-term repair assigned to it. Immediate repairs are usually completed within 10 business days and longer-term repairs are included in future works programs and prioritised based on safety and other factors such as path use.

Path maintenance is completed in packages of work which are divided into either geographic area and/or priority level. Currently, there are 4 packages of concrete works across Canberra. The packages are listed below.

Please note: these works do not include the replacement of whole paths. The maintenance sites are generally smaller sections of path that requires repair.
