The ACT Government is investigating options to provide more fields for Canberrans to play sport. Five dryland ovals have been identified as possible options to expand and complement nearby sporting facilities and to be brought ‘online’ in future for formal sport booking. Provide your feedback and learn more on YourSay.
ACT Government irrigated sportsgrounds will be temporarily closed for 2 weeks from Thursday 17 September to Wednesday 30 September 2026 (inclusive) to prepare fields for the summer sport season ahead. This work is essential to help maintain the 129 sportsgrounds that are used year-round for various sporting groups. Any sporting groups planning on using the grounds from Thursday 17 to Wednesday 30 September 2026 will need to liaise with their sport peak body who will make the necessary arrangements with the ACT Government.
The ACT Government manages more than 280 hectares of irrigated sports fields. This includes approximately 884 individual sporting fields available for hire. We also have 32 dryland ovals which offer informal recreational opportunities.
Individuals and sporting organisations can hire a sportsground.
