Project description

We are improving our stormwater network to make it more environmentally friendly and safer for Canberrans. Rolling upgrades are being planned around Canberra to better manage water movements. ACT Healthy Waterways is improving the quality of water entering our lakes and waterways.

About the stormwater network

Urban development increases the number of surfaces from which rainfall flows into the stormwater network. Rainfall flows from the roofs of buildings, paved areas, roads, car parks, grassed areas and gardens into the stormwater network.

The stormwater network may reach capacity during heavy rainfall. Excess water flows through a network of drains, channels and floodways into bodies of water and retarding basins. These lakes and ponds also provide recreational opportunities and enhances the urban landscape.

Projects

The following projects are underway:

Kippax Group Centre stormwater improvements

Stormwater upgrades will be delivered in and around the Kippax Group Centre over the coming years. The current project is focused on three sites:

1. the Southern Cross Drive bridge underpass from the Kippax Group Centre to Florey Drive. These works will include widening of the bridge underpass, construction of new stormwater infrastructure (a swale) and landscaping.

2. Moyes Crescent, Holt. These works will include construction of new stormwater infrastructure (a swale) and modification of existing and construction of new stormwater services.

3. Starke Street, Holt. These works will include clearing of the existing overgrown swale.

Duffy stormwater improvements

Stormwater upgrades will be delivered at two locations in Duffy over the coming years.

1. Duffy Oval. This project will deliver earthworks and stormwater upgrades to the southern boundary of Duffy Oval. Duffy Oval functions as an existing retarding basin with these works to direct overland flows into this basin.

2. Eucumbene Drive, Duffy. This project will deliver stormwater upgrades along Eucumbene Drive from its intersection with Cotter Road.

Goliath Court, O'Connor

Work will begin in the coming weeks to deliver stormwater upgrades in and around Goliath Court in O’Connor. Construction is expected to take approximately six months to complete (weather permitting).

Upcoming work

Work is expected to begin on site from Monday 15 April 2024 (weather permitting). The first activities will be site establishment including installing the site compound and sheds which will be located in the urban open space adjacent to David Street.

Work will be carried out as dayworks only between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday. If required, work may be undertaken on weekends between 8 am and 4 pm.

Activities include:

  1. fencing of worksite and installation of tree protection fencing around trees not impacted by the works
  2. demolition, excavation, construction and transportation of materials using a range of vehicles including bob cats, excavators and trucks
  3. asphalting where road surfaces are impacted by the works.

Some trees will be removed to facilitate these upgrades. Trees will be replaced at a ratio of 2:1 which on this project will see 3 trees removed and 6 trees planted in replacement. Tree removal will begin from  Tuesday 23 April 2024.

Staging of works

To minimise impacts to residents and businesses within the local O’Connor shops, works will be staged with each stage taking one to two months to complete (weather permitting). As works are progressively completed, sections will open up and new sections will close.

  • Stage 1: upgrading and installing new stormwater pipes through the urban open space adjacent to Sullivans Creek from Condamine Street.
  • Stage 2: installing two new stormwater connections across David Street and adjacent to Goliath Court, this may include temporary closures of David Street
  • upgrading and installing new stormwater pipes within the O’Connor shops.
  • Stage 3: upgrades within the O’Connor shops (kerbs, footpaths, etc) along with reconstruction of the vehicle crossings at the entrances to Bluebell and Sargood streets from Macpherson Street.

Traffic and pedestrian access

Pedestrian, shopfront and residential property access will be maintained at all times. For safety reasons, there will be detours in place for pedestrians around the various worksites.

There will be temporary changes for road users along Macpherson Street and David Street. This may include partial or full road closures. Roadside signage will be in place and updates provided via this page.
