City Services storm response
Update at 4pm on Wednesday 5 March 2025
On Wednesday 15 January 2025 parts of Canberra were impacted by storm activity, with the Gungahlin region hardest hit.
Clean-up crews from City Services worked closely with the Emergency Services Agency to respond to storm damage.
Storm clean-up was complete by the end of February 2025. For several weeks crews worked hard to triage and respond to all 495 tree maintenance requests.
This type of storm response can often take several weeks as some requests involve multiple trees or sites. In addition, removal of trees is undertaken in stages, with the first step being the removal of the bulk of the tree and crews then returning to remove any remaining debris or stumps.
The highest priority for the crews is always jobs that pose a safety hazard on public land.
Crews have now returned to their normal duties.
Temporary green waste skip bins and other clean-up activities
To further assist the community with storm clean‑up, green waste skip bins were provided in Amaroo, Ngunnawal and Nicholls.
Additional street sweeping was also undertaken in suburbs that were hardest hit by the storm.
Things to remember
Canberrans are asked to remember the below when it comes to fallen trees.
- If you see a tree fallen on powerlines call @EvoenergyACT on 131 093. If there are powerlines down, don’t approach them and keep at least 8 metres away.
- If there’s a tree down on private land, the landowner is responsible for its removal. Please don’t move the tree or branches to the nature strip.
- If you see a tree down on public land you can log a job using Fix my street.
- If you see a tree that is unsafe or damaging property, call ACTSES on 132 500.
- Removal of trees is undertaken in stages, with the first step being the removal of the bulk of the tree. Crews will be back as soon as possible to complete the next steps, where needed, and remove any remaining debris or stumps.
