Abandoned vehicles

Please report unattended vehicles posing a public safety risk to ACT Policing on 000.

If we cannot establish an owner for an unattended vehicle, it will be declared abandoned and then removed. Abandoned vehicles can include cars, motorcycles, vans, trucks, trailers, caravans and boats.

Abandoned vehicles can be reported to the ACT Government. Before making a report, please check the registration status of the vehicle. If the vehicle is registered, it is more likely to be an unattended vehicle than an abandoned vehicle.

Once investigated, the ACT Government can remove abandoned vehicles parked on public land or open private place.

To make a parking complaint about a registered vehicle, please use the report illegal parking form.

Report abandoned vehicle

You can report an abandoned vehicle on Fix My Street or by calling 13 22 81. Please have the following information available:

  • registration number (if known)
  • registration status
  • make, model and colour
  • location
  • length of time parked
  • condition of vehicle (for example, vandalised, damaged, missing plates, flat tyres)

Photos also help us locate the vehicle. They can also provide evidence as to the condition and possible status of the vehicle.

Investigation

The ACT Government investigates each abandoned vehicle report and will:

  • make all reasonable enquiries to establish an owner
  • ask the owner to remove their vehicle, if the owner has been identified
  • remove and impound the vehicle, where an owner cannot be identified
  • organise the disposal of the vehicle, where unclaimed.

Abandoned and unattended vehicles are managed in accordance with the legislative provisions of the Litter Act 2004, Public Unleased Land Act 2013 and Uncollected Goods Act 1996.
