Project description
Three key intersections have been signalised along Novar Street and Kent Street in Yarralumla and Deakin to improve traffic flow, capacity and safety. The 3 intersections are:
- Dudley Street/Novar Street/Kent Street/Adelaide Avenue on-ramp
- Adelaide Avenue off-ramp/Kent Street
- Kent Street/Denison Street
These 3 intersections experience congestion, particularly during morning and evening peak periods. Approximately 11,000 vehicles use these intersections per day with 1,500 per hour in peak periods. The installation of traffic signals and other safety improvements will reduce queue lengths and accidents and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The signals at the three intersections will be coordinated to optimise traffic flows during both morning and peak periods.
Key features
- traffic lights at all 3 intersections to improve the safety of road users and establish a smooth flow of vehicles, reduce travel times and reduce the risk of accidents
- changes to the lane configurations and footpaths across the Kent Street bridge to maximise use of the deck area for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists
- installation of new signalised pedestrian crossings at all three intersections
- upgrading of footpaths and kerb ramps, linking to the surrounding path network
- a new off-road cycle connection from the Adelaide Avenue off-ramp
- upgraded streetlighting
- landscaping to enhance visual amenity of the area.
You will notice these intersection upgrades result in vehicles being unable to turn right onto Kent Street from Denison Street, however access to travel south will remain via Denison Street.
This project is jointly funded between the ACT and Australian Governments as part of the Commonwealth's Investment Road and Rail Program.
