Solar lighting at concrete bus shelters

From July 2026 works will begin to install 28 solar lights at concrete bus shelters that are positioned close to shops, schools and aged care facilities.

Project description

The ACT Government is progressively lighting bus shelters (concrete and glass) across the city.

Bus shelters typically rely on overhead streetlighting for illumination. While glass shelters easily allow for streetlighting to penetrate the interior of the shelter, the iconic Canberra concrete shelter’s design does not afford such illumination. As such, there is a perception the concrete bus shelters can be unsafe at night.

A solar lighting trial started at five concrete bus shelters in the industrial suburb of Mitchell in 2021. Solar lighting was installed at an additional 31 locations in 2023.

The upgraded shelters benefit from improved lighting, particularly during evening and early morning hours. Increased visibility will help make passengers feel safer and more comfortable while waiting for services, an important outcome identified through community feedback and planning initiatives.

In addition to safety improvements, the use of solar-powered technology supports Canberra’s sustainability goals by reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. These upgrades also encourage public transport use and active travel, including walking and cycling.
