Kingston Cycleway

Project description

Construction is underway on Kingston Cycleway.

The ACT Government is investing in the C2 – City to Queanbeyan route with upgrades proposed to 3 stages. The upgrades are between the Kings Avenue Bridge and the Monaro Highway and Canberra Avenue underpass to improve cyclist safety and encourage the uptake of active travel in south Canberra.

This project will be delivered in stages:

Stage 1 – design and construction (complete)

A temporary quick-build two-way protected cycle lane has been installed in the lane adjacent to the existing path on Bowen Drive from the Kings Avenue Bridge to the Bowen Drive car park. The cycle lane is separated from the trafficable lane by a recycled rubber separation kerb secured to the ground. The cycle lane is signed for cycling and other mobility devices only and the existing path is signed for pedestrians only. New kerb and pavement have been constructed to link the cycle lane to the existing off-road path network at either end.

Stage 2A – Bowen Drive to the Wentworth Avenue/Eastlake Parade intersection (construction underway)

Construction will begin in the first week of August 2026. Works are expected to take 4 months to complete, weather and site conditions permitting. This stage of the cycleway is expected to be open for use in late 2026.

This is the second stage of the cycleway to be constructed. It will be constructed in the northern verge of Bowen Drive.

Key features include:

• 3-metre-wide shared cycling path
• streetlighting improvements
• new raised crossing
• new kerb ramps.

Most of the works will be carried out as dayworks between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday. At times, if required, works may be carried out during the same hours on weekends.

The On-Lake café will remain accessible at all times during construction. However, there will be intermittent access changes to facilitate building the new path and driveway connections. There will be temporary changes for road users and pedestrians during these works. This includes reduced speed limits and minor detours.

Pedestrian detours will be in place whilst the path is being constructed. Signage will be installed to safely detour pedestrians around the path closures.

38 trees will also be removed to accommodate the new path. These will be re-planted at a 2:1 ratio along the length of Wentworth Avenue and Canberra Avenue. Some trees will be planted in this construction stage, with the remainder of the trees being planted throughout the duration of the broader construction program.

Stage 2B – Wentworth Avenue/Eastlake Parade intersection to Wentworth Avenue/Cunningham Street intersection (design underway)

A community pop-up will be held on Saturday 29 August 2026 to share the preliminary design with the community for information. The project team will be available to answer any questions you may have about the preliminary design.

• Location: Norgrove Park, near the intersection of Eastlake Parade and Eyre Street

Key features of Stage 2B

• 3-metre-wide shared path in the eastern verge along Wentworth Avenue between Eastlake Parade and Cunningham Street.
• Parking reconfigured along Wentworth Avenue between Eyre Street and Cunningham Street. Parking will change from 90-degree to 45-degree spaces, resulting in a permanent reduction of 20 parking spaces overall (map provided).
• Changes to increase safe crossing at the Wentworth Avenue intersections with Eastlake Parade, Giles Street, Eyre Street, Dawes Street and Cunningham Street.
• New pedestrian crossing at Gosse Street.
• Safer cyclist and pedestrian movement across the Eastlake Parade traffic lights by reconfiguring the intersection and removing the right turn slip lane.
• The ‘Old Bus Depot Markets Wentworth Avenue’ bus stop (on routes 182, 2, 56 and 6) will be relocated 65 metres further east down Wentworth Avenue, closer to the future Kingston Arts Precinct entrance located at the corner of Gosse Street.

What you need to know

Twenty parking spaces will be permanently removed to facilitate the cycleway. During the design phase a parking study was undertaken, this study found that there is sufficient alternate parking in nearby areas to accommodate the reduction of 20 parking spaces.

Some trees may be removed and new trees planted elsewhere along the route as a part of these works.

Stage 2C – Wentworth Avenue/Cunningham Street intersection to the Canberra Avenue Service Road

Design work is complete.

Stage 3 – Canberra Avenue Service Road to the Monaro Highway

Design work is complete. This stage is funded for design only.
