Current update

Stage 1: Construction is complete. The two-way protected cycle lane is open for use.

Stage 2: In February 2026, the Works Approval for construction of segments 1 and 2 of the cycleway was agreed to by the National Capital Authority.

Design work for cycling infrastructure from Bowen Drive to the Canberra Avenue service road is currently underway.

Construction of Segment 2 is expected to begin in mid-2026.  Segment 2 extends from the existing Bowen Drive on-road cycle lane pop up, down Bowen Drive to the Eastlake Parade traffic lights.

Stage 3: Design work is complete for cycling infrastructure from the Canberra Avenue service road to the Monaro Highway and Canberra Avenue underpass.

Project description

Design is underway on Kingston Cycleway.

The ACT Government is investing in the C2 – City to Queanbeyan route with upgrades proposed to 3 stages. The upgrades are between the Kings Avenue Bridge and the Monaro Highway and Canberra Avenue underpass to improve cyclist safety and encourage the uptake of active travel in south Canberra.

This project will be delivered in stages:

Stage 1 – design and construction (complete)

A temporary quick-build two-way protected cycle lane has been installed in the lane adjacent to the existing path on Bowen Drive from the Kings Avenue Bridge to the Bowen Drive car park. The cycle lane is separated from the trafficable lane by a recycled rubber separation kerb secured to the ground. The cycle lane is signed for cycling and other mobility devices only and the existing path is signed for pedestrians only. New kerb and pavement have been constructed to link the cycle lane to the existing off-road path network at either end.

Stage 2 – design of all segments and construction of priority segments

New and upgraded cycling infrastructure between Bowen Drive and the Canberra Avenue service road. The proposed infrastructure is a mix of shared and separated cycling facilities along with raised and at-grade pedestrian crossings, however this will be further developed in the design phase.

Under this stage of work the cycleway from Bowen Park to Canberra Avenue Services Road will be progressed to detail design. Priority segments from this section will then be progressed to construction within the budget.

Stage 3 – design only

New and upgraded cycling infrastructure from the Canberra Avenue service road to the Monaro Highway/Canberra Avenue underpass. Design work is complete.
