Project description

Construction is underway on Gundaroo Drive duplication.

The ACT Government is upgrading Gundaroo Drive to a dual carriageway between Ginninderra Drive and the Barton Highway.

Construction is complete in the sections between the Barton Highway and Chuculba Crescent and Baldwin Drive and Ginninderra Drive. Work is continuing in the section between Chuculba Crescent to Baldwin Drive, including the installation of traffic lights at the Owen Dixon Drive intersection.

This project is jointly funded between the ACT and Australian Governments under the Commonwealth’s Infrastructure Investment Program.

Key features

Two lanes in each direction between Ginninderra Drive and the Barton Highway.
6.4 kilometres of new on-road cycle lanes.
New signalised intersections at Dumas Street and Owen Dixon Drive.
Trialling a reduced speed limit (60km/h) along the length of the road between Ginninderra Drive and the Barton Highway.
Widening of the existing roundabouts at Chuculba Crescent and Baldwin Drive.
New bridges on Gundaroo Drive over Ginninderra Creek (northbound and southbound).
Replace all existing underpass structures with new wider structures with lighting and connecting paths.
Additional bus stops and upgrading of existing ones.
Removal of 365 trees to be replaced by a total of 689 trees for the length of the project.

Construction update

From Friday 2 February 2024, southbound traffic (travelling towards Belconnen) has been moved onto the northbound lanes between Baldwin Drive and Owen Dixon Drive. This will allow works to be undertaken on the southbound lanes. Updates will continue to be provided on this project page and via email.

Pedestrian and cyclist detours

Due to significant bridgeworks, there are changes to pedestrian and cyclist access currently in place. Access beneath Gundaroo Drive through the underpasses will be unavailable. Detour signage will be in place. You can also take a look at the Gundaroo Drive pedestrian detours map (PDF 1.5 MB).

Works near Giralang Pond and wetlands

Prior to the commencement of works, a number of approvals were required to facilitate construction activities including a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and an Erosion Sediment Control and Waste Management Plan. This included a request for a water extraction permit for Giralang Pond (at Smalley Crescent, JPG 167.1 KB).

Approvals were received to lower the Giralang Pond by up to 500mm whilst undertaking bridge works in the upper end of the pond to minimise water ingress into the piers as well as to reduce/eliminate the risk of sediment entering the pond water. A pump for the purposes of water extraction has now been placed - this water will be used for dust control and construction activities for the duration of the project. This area will be reinstated to its original condition upon completion of the project.

The community may also notice controls put in place to support the bridge works. All controls installed in accordance with the approved CEMP. The existing vegetation has not been removed, however geofabric has been placed over it with rock infill placed to provide a safe and stable working platform for the machinery to operate from. Additional controls similar to this are installed downstream to prevent/minimise sediment migration.
