Pavement rehabilitation - completed projects

Northbourne Avenue - 2021

Project description

Three sections of Northbourne Avenue were upgraded in 2020 and 2021. Two of those sections required full rehabilitation.

The sections upgraded were:

  • Macarthur Avenue to Mouat Street (northbound) - rehabilitation
  • Antill Street to Wakefield Avenue (southbound) - resurfacing
  • Greenway Street to Macarthur Avenue (northbound) - rehabilitation.

These projects were funded jointly by the ACT Government and the Australian Government as part of the Shovel Ready Infrastructure Investment Program.

This project continued our use of more environmentally sustainable products by undertaking a recycling process with foam bitumen stabilisation where no materials are wasted and the new road laid is made of recycled materials. During the first stage of works between Macarthur Avenue and Mouat Street, the following benefits were seen:

  • More than 6,000 tonnes of existing pavement material recycled on site
  • New imported materials to site was reduced by 69%
  • 20 weeks reduction of traffic impacts for the community (80% faster than using traditional techniques)
  • A reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (measured in CO2 equivalents) by 61%.
  • 40% savings in project costs and a road that is built to last for the next 2 decades.

Macarthur Avenue to Mouat Street

Using standard methods of pavement rehabilitation, this project would have taken approximately 26 weeks to complete. However, using foam bitumen stabilisation the project took just 6 weeks.

David Walsh Avenue and Isabella Drive - 2023

Repairs have been completed along David Walsh Avenue in Forde and Isabella Drive to create a smooth, more resilient road for safer travel and better driveability.

These road repairs were significant and included:

  • removal of existing road pavement
  • repairs to kerbing and stormwater drains where required
  • placement of new road pavement
  • line marking.

This project continued our use of more environmentally sustainable products by undertaking a recycling process with foam bitumen stabilisation where no materials are wasted and the new road laid is made of recycled materials.

This project was funded under the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program.

Tarra Place - 2023

Project description

Tarra Place and Jabanungga Avenue were constructed as part of Ngunnawal Estate Development 3B Stage 2 in 1994. The road pavement has repeatedly and rapidly deteriorated from water saturation in three areas at the intersection of Tarra Place and Jabanungga Crescent since around 2014.

A range of investigations have taken place including site visits, aerial mapping, CCTV inspections, visual inspections with a ground penetrating radar to locate existing services and geotechnical investigations to determine the extent of the damage.

Investigations to determine the source of the underground water were inconclusive. However, it was determined the water was not running water from existing utility services and was existing pooled water which could be related to a rising water table following a rainfall event. Through the investigations it was determined pavement rehabilitation and upgrades to existing drainage infrastructure are the necessary treatments.

Stage 1

Construction for initial pavement rehabilitation works included the installation of drainage ‘blankets’ which serve as membrane under the road pavement to help water drain and placement of new road pavement.

While carrying out these construction works, additional road repairs were identified for the intersection of Arrabri Street, Warabin Crescent and Jabanungga Avenue.

Construction

  • Start date: November 2022
  • Completion date: February 2023

Stage 2

The additional road repairs identified for the intersection of Arrabri Street, Warabin Crescent and Jabanungga Avenue are complete.

These works included repairs to the damaged road, installation of additional underground drainage and an asphalt overlay.

Construction

  • Start date: March 2023
  • Completion date: March 2023

2025
