A new public toilet was delivered in September 2023 behind the Florey shops in the green space bordered by Ratcliffe Crescent, Connah Street and Kresteven Street. Artwork by Steven Kennedy has been applied to the exterior.
At this location it provides good visual and pedestrian connection and accessibility to the shops, is close to the existing playground and has good passive surveillance. It was also the preferred location due to its proximity to essential services (power, sewerage, water) required for the toilets to function.
Passive surveillance means the toilet is easily visible from people using adjacent public areas and was a key factor in determining the location as the more visible the toilet, the less attractive it is for anti-social behaviour. The location of the toilet provides passive surveillance from the shops, playground, nearby pathways and vehicles on surrounding streets including Ratcliffe Crescent and Connah Street.
Four trees were removed to facilitate the location of the new toilet block. These were replaced by eight new trees.
