Mawson stormwater and placemaking improvements

Complete: Mawson stormwater and placemaking improvements .

Project description

Start date: February 2023

Completion date: October 2023

Work was undertaken to stormwater infrastructure (including walls that operate as retarding structures) upstream of the Mawson Group Centre. This project addressed the flooding issues in the vicinity of the Mawson Group Centre. These issues were identified in the Mawson Group Centre Master Plan and a number of flood studies undertaken by the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate.

Key features

  • Diversion of stormwater through landscape berms and walls that provide amenity value in addition to flood protection.
  • Maintain the existing Yarralumla Creek channel.
  • Improve some of the frequently used pedestrian routes on the southern side of the Mawson Group Centre including building a new accessible pathway between the Mawson shops and the Mawson playing fields and adjacent parking areas.
  • Upgrade the landscaping between the carparks on the southern side of Mawson shops and the Mawson playing fields.
  • Planting a selection of tree species to provide long term shade, reduce root ingress into the playing fields, and enhance amenity as well as reduce urban heat effects.

This project was jointly funded between the ACT and Australian Governments under the Commonwealth's National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program.
