Project description
Complete: Lanyon Marketplace improvements.
Public space improvements are complete at the Lanyon Marketplace in Conder. The works have improved access and the overall look and feel of the shops, encouraging the community to shop local and spend more time in their suburb.
A draft preliminary design was released for public consultation from June to August 2023. More information on the consultation process and the feedback received is available on YourSay Conversations.
Design changes
The preliminary designs for public space improvements at the Lanyon Marketplace were released in June 2023 for community feedback.
The preliminary design included a fully raised intersection at the Sidney Nolan Street and Balcombe Street intersection. Design changes were required to this element for 2 main reasons.
Firstly, the pedestrian crossings needed to be revised to accommodate traffic impacts for a new fast-food outlet at 6 Sidney Nolan Street. This development was expected to increase vehicle traffic entering the shops from Balcombe Street. Separate raised pedestrian crossings were identified as a safer approach to maintain traffic flow in the area and reduce pedestrian and vehicle conflicts.
Secondly, the raised shared zone had the potential to create stormwater drainage issues on Sidney Nolan Street. Construction of a raised intersection would have required extensive stormwater upgrades. This would have significantly increased the cost of delivery as well as the duration of construction.
Feedback provided during the preliminary design phase requested safety and accessibility improvements on Sidney Nolan Street and Balcombe Street. The revised pedestrian crossing configuration that has been delivered has still achieved these community priorities.
