Florey all-abilities playground


Current update

Design work will be underway in 2026 in consultation with key stakeholders.

Site investigations have been undertaken to identify the preferred location of the playground based on a multicriteria analysis and site investigations. This process has determined the new all-abilities playground will be built at Sir Howard Florey Oval, accessible from Kesteven Street at the Florey local shops. An indicative site location map is below.

Project description

Planning is underway on Florey all-abilities playground.

The ACT Government is committed to improving playgrounds across Canberra and providing people of all ages and abilities with fun, creative and engaging play experiences.

The ACT Government committed funding in the 2025-26 ACT Budget to design and build a new all-abilities playground in Florey.

What is an all-abilities playground?

  • It is a playground which caters to a range of abilities and features inclusive play opportunities and amenities for children and their families to play, socialise, explore and challenge physical limits.

What may be included in an all-abilities playground?

  • Equipment that is accessible by children of all ability levels without being identifiable as ‘disabled access’ items.
  • Natural and sensory play zones using natural features to stimulate exploratory play.
  • Flexible play spaces, including open grassed areas that allow for opportunistic play.
  • Opportunities for creative, physical, social and cognitive play.
  • Zoned spaces that cater to a range of different age and developmental levels.

Will the playground cater to parents and care givers and have an accessible toilet or barbeque facilities?

  • The playground will be inclusive of parents and caregivers, including seating and shade.
  • A new toilet and barbeque facilities are not included in the project scope.

How is the ACT Government engaging with key stakeholders?

  • The ACT Government is developing the playground design in consultation with the ACT Office for Disability and the ACT Disability Reference Group.
  • It is anticipated the design will be shared in 2026 for information. Further timeline updates will be provided on this page as work progresses.
