Mitchell Resource Management Centre planning

Planning is underway on Mitchell Resource Management Centre proposed relocation.

Canberra continues to grow and we need to ensure our waste management infrastructure is adequate and plan for its upgrade and expansion alongside population growth.

Stage one

In late 2020 a project to investigate the feasibility of Mitchell Resource Management Centre upgrades and the identification of future waste sites in North Canberra commenced. The purpose of this project was to assess all available options for the relocation or upgrade of the Mitchell Resource Management Centre. The feasibility study also provided information about the appropriateness of any future sites for new facilities and/or potential upgrades to the Mitchell Resource Management Centre.

The feasibility study and associated design study report (PDF 1.5 MB) on the future planning of waste facilities on Canberra's northside was released in late 2022. It addresses several medium and long term planning priorities for the appropriate management of waste in the ACT.

The report identifies several options for new waste management centres and addresses the suitability of sites that could facilitate future technologies.

This work has also informed the new Northside green waste drop-off location. The findings show there are limited sites on the Northside for these types of facilities which are critical to deliver the services Canberrans expect.

Stage two

This will further the recommendations of the first stage through investigating options to improve the function of the current facility and the relationship with the surrounding urban development. It will focus on identifying short-term options for safety, amenity and compliance.
