Project description
Complete: the new Palmerville Heritage Park loop path.
Palmerville Heritage Park in Belconnen is an historic cultural landscape that represents a connection to the early rural settlement of the ACT. A section of the park was renamed the Palmerville Heritage Park in 2005 by the ACT Government to reinforce the park’s origins and heritage significance. The park contains evidence of past land use in this area as a rural settlement from the early 1800s to the 1950s.
The park is near the residential suburbs of McKellar, Evatt and Giralang and there was community feedback requesting the continuation of the existing walking trail in the park to create a loop.
The site is highly flood prone. Ginninderra Creek runs along the east side of the park (along Gundaroo Drive) which is known to flood in rain events. This was considered in the final alignment of the path. The community is encouraged to use caution and avoid the area after large rain events as this site is prone to flooding.
The area is also home to native and protected wildlife. Environmental investigations were undertaken during design and prior to construction.
This project was part of an ongoing commitment from the ACT Government to improve walking and cycling infrastructure across the city.
