Project description
Design is underway on Umbagong District Park improvements.
The ACT Government recognises the critical role and value of play in enriching the lives of Canberrans of all ages and creating a healthy, connected, vibrant and sustainable Canberra. The upgrade of play facilities at Umbagong District Park aims to deliver play priorities as identified in the ACT Play Strategy.
In 2024 the ACT Government committed to upgrade Umbagong District Park in Belconnen.
Umbagong District Park is a large natural reserve which runs along Ginninderra Creek, known for its ecological, cultural and heritage values, paths and recreational opportunities. The park offers a unique blend of bushland, recreation areas and protected conservation areas, making it a unique destination for nature lovers and outdoor activities.
The park currently has a junior and senior playground, but facilities are limited and space to expand these existing facilities is constrained by the heritage and ecological values in the park.
The preliminary designs will consider the space available, connectivity and access, landscape amenities, public safety and the character of the park, as well as the budget available to deliver the project scope.
Key features
- New playground facilities including a group rope swing for users (5+ years old) and a ninja circuit (users 8+ years old and adults)
- New paths
- New picnic area and seating
Site identified for improvements
An environmental impact assessment was conducted to confirm the site with as little impact as possible on surrounding flora and fauna.
The Umbagong Landcare was also consulted on and endorses the proposed site. Below you will find a site assessment matrix which looked at each of the possible locations and a map of the indicative area for improvements.
