Project description

Design is underway on RSPCA ACT facility.

Each year thousands of animals can call the RSPCA home. The RSPCA ACT has been at its current site in Weston since 1955 and the current infrastructure is more than 40 years old, nearing the end of its useful life. A new purpose-built facility will support RSPCA staff and volunteers as well as animals in care at the RSPCA.

The new facility will:

  • be designed to provide a safe and secure environment to support animal welfare
  • provide better amenities to care for animals, including native wildlife
  • be more accessible, ensuring easy access for staff and the Canberra community from nearby bus stops and a main arterial road.

Proposed site

The new proposed site is in Pialligo on Section 14, Block 2 (see map). This site is located on the eastern side of Fairbairn Avenue and is bounded by the Australian Defence Force Academy and Royal Military College Duntroon to the west and Majura Parkway and the Canberra Airport to the east.

The facility was originally proposed to be located in the southwest corner of the block. Due to the presence of Striped Legless Lizard and Natural Temperate Grassland in this section, it was not possible to construct the new facility without causing significant impact to these vulnerable communities.

The facility location has been adjusted to the northwest extent of the block (see map). Environmental assessments have indicated this area is free of any species of significance, and has no significant Natural Temperate Grassland areas. This means the proposed facility will not cause significant environmental impact and not require further EPBC/EIS approvals at this time.

Engagement is continuing with stakeholders including the RSPCA, ACT Equestrian Association, Duntroon Horse Paddock Users Group, Territory Agistment (Paddock Contractor), Defence, Canberra Airport and adjoining land users.
