    2020 upgrades

    Kambah (at the district park)

The design at Kambah is based on a shell, with a range of play areas connected by rock and log steppers surrounding a central open area which features drums, totem poles and some bright nature-based artwork.

Yerrabi Pond (at the district park)

The playground at Yerrabi Pond has an aquatic theme, featuring a central climbable turtle that pays homage to the species that live in our local waterways.

Following playground reviews in Waramanga, Torrens, Narrabundah, Higgins and Richardson, new playgrounds were constructed in each of the suburbs. Construction was completed in 2020.

The playground at Waramanga features log steppers, tree balance beams and large play equipment with climbing play and slide. There are elements for swinging, climbing and exploring, with plenty of space for relaxing under the shaded seating area and teenage hang-out area. Other elements featured across the new playgrounds include a climbing net, log steppers and basketball court at Torrens, dirt bike track, accessible spinner and picnic shelter at Higgins, nature play circuit, climbing slope and birds nest swing at Narrabundah, skate ledges and ramps, nest swing and spinner at Richardson.

    2019 upgrades

The central Gungahlin Place median strip, between Efkarpidis Street and Hibberson Street, has been improved with increased play opportunities for local kids.

    • Additional play equipment next to the existing playground.
    • Softfall surfaces to keep kids safe.
    • Timber walking planks, rain garden and dry creek bed for kids to explore.
    • Birds nest style swing for all ages and abilities to enjoy.
    • New trees and grassed areas.
    • Bike racks and pedestrian paths accessible from nearby shops.

As part of the ACT Government’s Better Suburbs Program, a community-led Play Spaces Forum allocated $1.9 million to improve playgrounds.

One key decision was the allocation of $350,000 for new nature playgrounds to enhance Eddison Park in Woden and Glebe Park in the City. $150,000 has also been set aside to build a nature playground in Farrer. The forum specified these nature playgrounds are to be designed in partnership with the community.

In late 2018 and early 2019 targeted engagement and co-design with local schools, childcare centres and youth centres was undertaken, as well as broader community engagement. To find out more about the engagement process and what we heard, visit the YourSay page.

Construction has now been completed on three new nature playgrounds in Eddison Park, Farrer and Glebe Park to provide Canberran children with exciting new opportunities to be active, grow and learn.

The new nature playground in Farrer includes a range of zones for children to explore, including a climb zone, a scramble zone, a hide zone, a loose parts zone and a rest zone. Farrer’s nature playground features timber climbing structures, a sand pit, tunnel and climbing nets as well as a mountain bike circuit adjacent the playground.

The nature playground at Eddison District Park in Woden has a sand and water theme for younger kids that provides an opportunity to touch and manipulate the flow of water. In addition, the existing island has a new feature of a climbing mound with a tunnel, slide and bridges across the reed beds.

The nature playground designed for Glebe Park has been built in the elm tree forest near the existing play space and park rotunda. Features of the new playground include a dry gravel creek bed with water pump and sand play tables, tree house with ramp, ladder and fireman’s pole and adventure course of ropes, net and beams. It has many elements that allow access for inclusive play for children and adults with varying levels of mobility.
