Project description
Complete: Tharwa Drive improvements.
The ACT Government is committed to improving the safety of intersections. The intersections of Lawrence Wackett Crescent and Norman Lindsay Street with Tharwa Drive were identified for safety improvements.
This project was jointly funded between the ACT and Australian Governments under the Commonwealth’s Infrastructure Investment Program.
Background
Tharwa Drive is an arterial road dividing Calwell and Theodore and connecting the Monaro Highway in the east with Drakeford Drive and the village of Tharwa. Approximately 11.5 kilometres in length, it is a major transport route between Tuggeranong and Canberra City.

Upgrades at the Lawrence Wackett Crescent intersection (the t-intersection) were identified following a Black Spot Study. Collision data identifies the most common collision is vehicles colliding with vehicles, particularly between northbound and westbound vehicles.
Key features delivered:
- Installation of traffic lights.
- Relocation of the existing pedestrian crossing facilities on Lawrence Wackett Crescent to the new signalised intersection. No pedestrian crossing facilities will be provided across Tharwa Drive due to the existing pedestrian underpass east of the intersection.
- New concrete median and upgraded streetlights.
- Widening of the road pavement to provide 4.3 metre wide lanes in both directions.

The Norman Lindsay Street intersection was identified for improvements following a feasibility study into improvements along the section of Tharwa Drive between the Woodcock Drive/Box Hill Avenue roundabout and Pockett Avenue in Banks. This intersection recorded 38 crashes within the last 7-year data period. The most common crash type was collisions with right turning vehicles.
A feasibility study has been completed for this project and a design has been prepared. A roundabout has been installed to support traffic in this area.
