For after hours urgent public health matters including environmental health, radiation safety, food poisoning and communicable disease management phone:
Limited overtaking opportunities on the Monaro Highway within the ACT have contributed to increased accidents, including fatalities. This is especially true for northbound traffic travelling home from the snowy regions during the busy ski season. To address these safety concerns, safety improvements have been delivered on the Monaro Highway between Old Cooma Road and Williamsdale Road.
These safety improvements were the first deliverables under the Monaro Highway upgrades program. This program is supported by the ACT and Australian Governments as part of the Commonwealth’s Investment Road and Rail Program.
Key features
A new approximately two kilometre northbound overtaking lane between Williamsdale Road and Royalla Drive.
A wider median strip between the northbound and southbound lanes.
Safety barriers in sections along the left-hand side of the road in both directions.
New left-turn slip lane for southbound traffic at the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Old Cooma Road to improve safety for vehicles exiting the highway.
Sealed shoulders and new safety barriers at the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Williamsdale Road.
In a first for the ACT we used a wide centreline treatment between the northbound and southbound lanes. These are commonly applied to high-speed roads where traffic volumes are high and aim to reduce the number of head-on collisions that occur when vehicles cross the centre lines. The line marking indicates whether overtaking is permitted, with broken and unbroken lines as per the standard road rules. Signage has also been installed to raise awareness of the new markings.
Construction of further upgrades to the Monaro Highway is currently underway.
