Project description

Planning is underway on Cotter Road traffic study.

The ACT Government completed a traffic study for Cotter Road. Cotter Road is an arterial dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. Cotter Road serves as a significant transport corridor and public transport rapid route between Weston Creek and the Molonglo Valley to the City.

The community has raised concerns about traffic congestion eastbound on Cotter Road up to the turn off onto the Tuggeranong Parkway, particularly during morning peak hour (map below). This results in traffic on Cotter Road building up past the Streeton Drive and Cotter Road intersection.

The study:

  • considers the landscape, cyclists, pedestrians, motorists, nearby development and possible physical changes to the road infrastructure
  • identifies cost effective and short-term solutions for minor works to improve public transport and traffic flow on Cotter Road. This is important whist alternative routes from the Molonglo Valley are being developed, such as the completion of John Gorton Drive with the Molonglo River Bridge.

A large residential development is also planned for release from 2028-29 as part of the Indicative Land Release Program in Weston Creek where the current RSPCA facility and the Joint Staff College are located. A second access point has also been investigated.

The City and Environment Directorate are also developing a traffic model to look at options for the Cotter Road/LDK Amberfield intersection.
