Secure your load on the road

Unsecure loads litter our roads and open spaces and are a major safety hazard. Any unsecure items in a car, ute, truck or trailer can become a dangerous projectile and put motorists, pedestrians and cyclists at risk.

Littering of any kind is illegal under the Litter Act 2004. This includes travelling with an uncovered load in a car, trailer, truck or ute, even if it does not result in littering.

Fines of $1,500 for an individual or $7,500 for corporations can apply for unsecure loads.

Litter from unsecure loads is avoidable if drivers take care when transporting items. Remember to:

  • ensure all loose items are secure no matter how small
  • restrain large items like furniture and white goods using webbing and/or straps
  • cover green waste using a net or tarpaulin.

We hope that motorists can help support our dedicated City Services crews that undertake litter picking activities by securing loads to lessen the amount of litter in our community.
