Bin inspections tell you what you can and cannot put in your household bins. Prior to collecting your household bin, we may do a visual assessment and then place a tag on your bin. The tag gives you feedback to help you use your household bins correctly. It tells you:
- if you have placed the correct items in your bin
- if you have placed any incorrect items in your bin.
You will not be fined or penalised for placing incorrect items in your bin. Your household bins will still be collected as normal unless hazardous material is discovered.
By using your bins correctly you are helping us to:
- reduce contamination
- improve resource recovery
- protect our recycling and composting systems.
Bin inspection process
Bin inspections are carried out by waste educators from the ACT Government or Envirocom Australia. Envirocom Australia is contracted by the ACT Government to provide specialised waste education services. They aim to inspect approximately 600 bins across various suburbs each week. Suburbs are randomly selected or chosen if issues have been reported during collection.
The waste educators only look inside bins that have been placed on the kerb for collection. They will not go through the contents of your bin and will only observe material at or near the top. They may move a few items from the top surface so they can provide accurate feedback.
The inspection is for education purposes only. It helps encourage better recycling and helps us learn more about current waste and recycling behaviours.
The waste educators carry a letter of authorisation from the ACT Government. You can ask to see it if you are unsure of what they are doing.
