Plastic Free July events to help Canberrans cut down on single-use plastics
Canberrans can pick up practical tips to reduce single-use plastics this July, with a series of free ACT NoWaste events happening online and in person. Plastic Free July is a global movement that encourages people to make small everyday changes that can help reduce waste and plastic pollution.
ACT NoWaste will host pop-up information stalls in Dickson and Mitchell and one online webinar, giving people simple ideas for cutting back on plastic at home, at work and while out and about.

Making a difference can be as simple as bringing a reusable coffee cup, carrying your own shopping bags, using a refillable drink bottle or choosing reusable food containers. These small swaps can help reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfill, waterways and the local environment.
Canberrans are also reminded that disposable coffee cups and lids cannot be recycled in the ACT, so they should go in the red general waste bin. Recycling should be placed loose in the yellow bin, not inside plastic bags, and soft plastics should stay out of the household recycling bin. If you are unsure what goes where, check the A-to-Z Guide to Recycling and Waste.
The ACT was one of the first places in Australia to ban a range of single-use plastic items, including plastic cutlery, plates, bowls, straws, shopping bags and expanded polystyrene food containers. These bans help reduce litter and keep plastic out of landfill, but everyday choices still play an important role.
