The ACT Government owns and manages more than 500 play spaces across Canberra.

There are 6.7 playgrounds per 1,000 children under 15 in the ACT, compared with the national average of 5.2. Most homes in Canberra are within 400 metres of a local playground. This ease of access to a play space and the surrounding green space is highly valued by the community.

We recognise the importance of play in enriching the lives of Canberrans of all ages and creating a healthy, connected, vibrant and sustainable place to live. The ACT Play Space Strategy (PDF 3.4 MB) sets the direction for the future of our play spaces.

ACT Play Space Strategy

The ACT Play Space Strategy is an initiative of the 2018 citizen-led Better Suburbs Play Spaces Forum.

The release of the strategy follows extensive community engagement undertaken in 2021. During the 6-week consultation period we received more than 700 pieces of feedback, with 90% of respondents fully supporting or mostly supporting the strategy's vision, objectives and actions.

The strategy sets out 6 key objectives to ensure an equitable, inclusive, diverse, safe and engaging mix of play opportunities across Canberra:

  1. Develop play spaces for better health, wellbeing and connectedness
  2. Keep play spaces safe and welcoming
  3. Make play spaces for everyone
  4. Improve the quality and diversity of play experience
  5. Foster sustainable play spaces that are resilient to a changing climate
  6. Partner with community to make better play spaces.
