Bulky waste collection for multi-unit developments

Building management must book bulky waste collections on behalf of residents in multi-unit developments, sometimes called MUDs, with shared waste.

The bulky waste collection service is for larger items such as old furniture and broken appliances.

To make sure all residents have fair access to bulky waste services, the following rules apply:

  • Each individual unit is entitled to one bulky waste collection per financial year.
  • Building managers can book one bulky waste collection per quarter for their complex, up to 4 times per financial year.

Steps for booking bulky waste collection at a building you manage

  1. Check the next available bulky waste collection date for the complex you manage. To do this, access the multi-unit developments bulky waste booking form, enter the suburb, section and block details for the property.
  2. Ask residents to complete the resident application form (PDF 91.6 KB) to collect information about the items they will include in the bulky waste booking. Inform residents of fees for mattresses and ensemble bases.
  3. At least 14 days before the collection date, complete the online multi-unit developments bulky waste booking form.
  4. Nominate a collection point.
  5. Communicate with residents in your complex ahead of the bulky waste collection date using the Bulky waste poster (PDF 309.9 KB).

How do residents apply for bulky waste collection?

Residents must contact their strata manager or building management to book a bulky waste booking on their behalf.

How can I collect information from residents?

Ask residents to complete the resident bulky waste application form (PDF 91.6 KB) so you can book on their behalf. The form explains which items are accepted and not permitted. Include fees for mattresses and ensemble bases.

Once you have collected the resident application forms, submit the multi-unit developments bulky waste booking form.

How do I make a bulky waste booking for a complex?

Check your next available collection date using the multi-unit developments bulky waste booking form. Bookings must be made at least 14 days prior.

At the time of booking, you will need to provide the individual unit numbers participating in the collection, the items for collection, and a nominated collection point at the building.

How often can I book a bulky waste collection?

To make sure all residents have fair access to bulky waste services, the following rules apply:

  • Each individual unit is entitled to one bulky waste collection per financial year.
  • Unit numbers are recorded at the time of booking. The system will not allow a unit number to be booked more than once in a financial year.
  • Building managers can book one bulky waste collection per quarter for their complex, up to 4 times per financial year.
  • You can view and book available collection dates for your complex for the next two quarters, up to 6 months in advance.

Is there a size limit?

Each individual apartment, townhouse or villa is eligible for one free bulky waste collection of up to 2 cubic metres each financial year. Items longer than 2 metres will not be accepted. The size allowance of your collection will be calculated based on the number of units participating. If the overall size of the items left for collection exceeds the allowance, some items may be left behind.

Are bulky waste collections free?

Bulky waste collections are a free service with the exception of disposal fees for mattresses and ensemble bases.

How do I manage disposal fees for mattresses and ensemble bases?

When asking residents to complete the resident bulky waste application form (PDF 91.6 KB), let them know the disposal fees for mattresses and ensemble bases.

If your bulky waste booking includes mattresses and ensemble bases, ACT NoWaste will send an email to the strata manager of your complex with a breakdown of fees.

Fees may be paid directly to ACT NoWaste by the resident or the strata. All fees must be paid at least 5 business days before the bulky waste collection date.

If the payment is not received in time, the bulky waste collection may be cancelled for all residents in your complex.

How do I choose a collection point?

Nominate a collection point which is:

  • within the complex property boundary

  • accessible for trucks, such as an above ground car park

  • not in a basement or underground carpark
  • a location residents can place items up to 48 hours before the scheduled collection time.

You may be contacted to discuss the collection point location at the complex.

Items should not be stored in public areas prior to 48 hours before the collection service unless the complex permits this and has space to store items safely.

Please note that an illegal dumping fine may be issued if items are left outside the property boundary.

What will happen on the collection day?

Items need to be placed at the nominated collection point before 7am on the morning of the collection date.

Two trucks are used for bulky waste collections:

  • one for e-waste, metals, white goods and reusable furniture
  • the other is for general waste which will go to landfill.

Both trucks will arrive on the same date, but they may arrive at different times.

Items which do not meet the eligibility criteria will be left behind and remain the responsibility of building management.

Will I receive a booking confirmation?

After submitting the booking form, you will receive an email confirmation with a service request number. You may check the status of your service request using your service request number, surname and postcode.

How do I cancel or change the booking?

Cancellations and changes can be made up to 5 business days before the scheduled collection. No changes will be accepted after this time.

If the cancellation is not received in time, unit numbers on the booking will not be eligible for another free bulky waste collection within this financial year.
