Project description
Complete: Tuggeranong foreshore improvements.
The ACT Government invested $4.75 million in improvements along the foreshore. The improvements aimed to make the area more liveable and accessible, and encourage the community to spend more time in our public spaces.
In 2022 we invited feedback on upgrades to the foreshore precinct. We received 657 items of feedback and summarised the key themes and insights in the What We Heard Report. For more information on the consultation that took place visit YourSay.
The Tuggeranong foreshore improvements included:
- improved access to recreation and resting spaces along the Lake Tuggeranong foreshore
- improved active travel connectivity to the Town Centre
- better green spaces and more plants
- more opportunities for accessible play in a revamped Town Park with new equipment.
Key features
- Tuggeranong Town Park Playground: play equipment now includes a climbing tower, sand digger, double flying fox, accessible carousel, balancing logs and an accessible nest swing. The existing climbing rope has been retained and relocated and sandstone blocks and logs have been installed to encourage free play. Shade sails and swing seats have been renewed, and existing play items repaired and repainted. A bike repair station has also been installed.
- College Walk: the path has been realigned, widened, duplicated and line marked for better cyclist and pedestrian access. New lighting has been installed and landscaping has been completed, including new trees. New street furniture has also been installed. A first for Canberra is the low carbon footprint pavement along half the cycle path which was made by reusing 540 old tyres. This water permeable path is better for tree health and captures pollutants before they enter Lake Tuggeranong.
- Toilet blocks: a new public toilet block with 2 accessible facilities which comply to Australian Standards and an upgrade of the existing public toilet.
- Bartlet Place crossing: the pedestrian and cyclist crossing has been upgraded to current standards for safety and access and better lighting has been installed.
- Reed Street: resurfacing of pedestrian paths and improved sight lines, as well as the installation of additional street furniture.
- New furniture: replacement of furniture near the boardwalk and on the foreshore path alignment near the Town Centre.
- Boardwalk: the boardwalk by the lake has been revitalised including replacement of the deck.
- Wayfinding: new wayfinding signs.
- Jetty and artwork: new artwork was installed on the jetty.
