On 1 July 2026, new limits and packaging requirements were introduced for domestic asbestos disposal at Canberra’s Resource Management Centres.
The changes have been introduced to strengthen safety controls and reduce risks associated with unloading and handling asbestos. Larger and heavier loads can increase the risk of injury, while damaged or poorly contained materials can increase the risk of asbestos dust exposure.
The domestic free-of-charge asbestos disposal allowance has now been reduced from 250 kg to 60 kg.
Domestic customers disposing of up to 60 kg of asbestos can continue to do so free of charge if the material meets the new requirements.
Each package must be:
- no larger than 600 mm x 600 mm x 200 mm
- no heavier than 20 kg
- limited to a maximum of 3 packages (60 kg total)
- double-wrapped and sealed in heavy-duty plastic with a minimum thickness of 200 microns (0.2 mm)
- labelled and identified to facility operators at the weighbridge on arrival.
Domestic asbestos loads of 0–60 kg are accepted at Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Management Centres and do not require a booking.
Domestic asbestos loads of 60–250 kg require a booking with Remondis and will only be accepted at the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre. A fee of $59.55 per load applies. Bookings can be made by contacting Remondis on 13 73 73 or emailing canberra@remondis.com.au.
Domestic customers in the ACT are reminded that the law requires people to engage a licensed asbestos removalist to remove asbestos from their house. For the latest compliance requirements, please consult the applicable Code of Practice and refer to guidance published by WorkSafe ACT.
