Belconnen

Mowing program

The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs and roads are inspected weekly and mowed as required.

Weed control

Crews were weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads in Kaleen.
  • Barton Highway and Ginninderra Drive.
  • Mowing obstacles in Evatt and Spence.
  • Underpasses in Spence.

Horticultural maintenance

Works were carried out in the following areas:

  • Underpasses in Bruce, Kaleen and Ginninderra Drive.
  • Planting shrubs and mulching on Townsend Place, John Knight Memorial Park.

Bridge maintenance

Flynn/Latham: The pedestrian bridge between Ginninderra Drive and Companion Crescent will undergo batter protection works from Tuesday 9 July until Tuesday 16 July 2024. The bridge will remain open for use during this time.

Graffiti removal

There were occasional lane closures on Thursday 11 July between 9:30 am and 4:00 pm in the following locations:

  • Belconnen Way (bridge under Gungahlin Drive Extension).
  • Gungahlin Drive Extension northbound lane, Noise Wall (next to GIO Stadium).

Rabbit control

Rabbit control operations occur roughly once every 6-13 weeks depending on inspection outcomes. There were no planned control works last week.

Street sweeping

Crews were sweeping cycle paths in Bruce.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Belconnen region. Below are the key updates for last week:

  • Belconnen skatepark half-pipe: The project is now complete with the new half-pipe opening to the public on Saturday 6 July 2024.
  • Macquarie shops improvements: Works are underway and are expected to take around 2 months to complete, weather permitting. There will be temporary changes for road users and pedestrians while these works are underway.
  • Kippax Group Centre upgrades: Construction works continue on the first stage of the project on the northern section of Hardwick Crescent, including demolition, service realignments and new stormwater and pavement installation. There is a road closure in place while these works are underway. This existing road closure is expected to be in place for approximately 4 months before works will move to the southern section.
  • Lake Ginninderra path upgrade: The works to improve the walking and cycling path along the lake edge are progressing well. Signage has been installed to assist users in accessing the Birrigai Cafe. There are changes to the Ginninderra Parkrun course while construction is underway. Central Canberra

Road resurfacing

Morshead Drive was closed eastbound from Kings Avenue to Russell Drive from 6 am Sunday 7 July until 6 am Monday 8 July 2024. More information on the National Capital Authority website.

Line marking

Occasional lane closures on Alinga Street at the City bus interchange (west of Northbourne Avenue) from 10 pm Sunday 7 July until 5:30am Monday 8 July 2024 (weather permitting).

Bridge maintenance

Occasional road closures on Adelaide Avenue on Monday 8 July 2024 from 8 pm until 6 am.

  • Arterial and collector roads in Forrest, Fyshwick, Narrabundah, Pialligo, Turner and Watson.
  • Canberra Avenue, Melbourne Avenue and Sydney Avenue.
  • Mowing obstacles in Barton, Forrest, Pialligo, Turner and Watson.

Physical weed removal was carried out on Antill Street, Barry Drive and Federal Highway.

Street sweeping

Street sweeping continues with the regular weekly winter sweeping period in Ainslie, Barton, Braddon, Campbell, Deakin, Dickson, Downer, Forrest, Griffith, Hackett, Kingston, Lyneham, Manuka, Narrabundah, O'Connor, Red Hill, Reid, Turner, Watson and Yarralumla.

Priority is given to streets with the heaviest leaf fall.

Horticultural maintenance

Works were carried out in the following areas:

  • Laneways in Campbell and Reid.
  • Downer, Hackett, Red Hill and Watson shops.
  • Kingston foreshore.
  • Navigators Park (Red Hill).
  • Roadside edging on 80km roads.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the central region. Below are the key updates for last week:

  • Inner north playground: Construction is underway and is expected to take around 12 months and be complete in the middle of 2025 (weather permitting). There are no road closures anticipated to be required during these works however there may be temporary traffic changes such as reduced speed limits to allow construction vehicles safe entry and exit from the worksite.
  • Age friendly suburbs: Path network upgrades at Reid are continuing and will be completed in mid July 2024.
  • Garden city cycleway: Construction will begin in mid-July 2024 to deliver stage 1A of the garden city cycleway. The first stage includes the section along Torrens Street between Cooyong Street and Ipima Street. Works are expected to take around 7 months to complete, weather permitting, and be open for use in early 2025. Construction will be managed to minimise impacts to residents and businesses. There will be temporary changes for road users and pedestrians during these works.

Gungahlin

Mowing program

The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs and roads are inspected weekly and mowed as required.

Streetlight upgrades

Path lighting upgrades are ongoing along Mirrabei Drive Bridge (northbound travelling into Gungahlin). The left hand lane was closed on Thursday 11 July 2024 between 9 am and 3:30 pm.

Weed control

Crews were weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads in Mitchell and Nicholls.
  • Mowing obstacles in Bonner, Harrison and Mitchell.

Serrated tussock control

Serrated tussock is an extremely invasive plant. Over the next few months, the ACT Government is conducting a targeted treatment program on parkland, roadsides and nature strips in Bonner, Forde, Jacka, Amaroo, Moncrieff, Taylor, Ngunnawal and Casey. For more information about serrated tussock and to view identification images please visit the NSW Weed Wise website.

The control works commenced last week in Bonner, Forde and Jacka.

Horticultural maintenance

Works were carried out in the following areas:

  • Neighbourhood parks in Nicholls.
  • Laneways in Palmerston.
  • Roadside edging on arterial roads in Gungahlin.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Gungahlin region. Below are the key updates for last week:

  • Gundaroo Drive duplication: Temporary traffic arrangements are in place including reduced speed limits on Gundaroo Drive while the current construction activity continues between Chuculba Crescent and Baldwin Drive.
  • Franklin dog park: Work is underway to deliver a new dog park in the open space bound by Nullarbor Avenue and Oodgeroo Avenue in Franklin. Dog agility elements, furniture and boulders will be installed over the coming weeks. Construction is expected to be complete and the park open to the public in the summer of 2024-25 (weather permitting). The community can expect to see trees, logs and boulders start to appear on site soon.
  • Yerrabi Pond District Park upgrades: Path lighting upgrades are ongoing along Mirrabei Drive Bridge (northbound travelling into Gungahlin). The left hand lane will be closed on Thursday 11 July 2024 between 9 am and 3:30 pm.

Tuggeranong

Mowing program

The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs and roads are inspected weekly and mowed as required.

Crews were mowing on Athllon Drive and Drakeford Drive.

Street sweeping

Crews were sweeping in Monash.

Weed control

Crews were weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads in Calwell, Gowrie, Isabella Plains, Richardson, Theodore and Wanniassa.
  • Ashley Drive.
  • Mowing obstacles in Calwell, Gowrie, Monash, Richardson and Theodore.

Physical weed removal was carried out on Athllon Drive.

Horticultural maintenance

Works were carried out in the following areas:

  • Gordon and Oxley.
  • Lake Tuggeranong.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Tuggeranong region. Below are the key updates for last week:

  • Sulwood Drive upgrades: Sulwood Drive is closed to all traffic between Inkster Street and Livingston Avenue until early August (weather permitting). This is for the first stage of the upgrades including the road pavement rehabilitation, installation of traffic lights at Mannheim Street and access improvements for the Mount Taylor car park.
  • Tuggeranong foreshore improvements: The boardwalk works are now open. The refresh of the bridge attached to the boardwalk is expected to be complete in July and new wayfinding signage is scheduled to be installed in the second week of July.
  • Mugga Lane landfill rehabilitation works: Preparatory works are underway at Mugga Lane landfill to enable a trial of a more environmentally friendly landfill rehabilitation process known as phytocapping. Phytocapping uses native plants, shrubs, grasses and trees to cap landfill cells and create a barrier between them and the above ground environment. Works are approximately 50% complete and are expected to continue for the next few months, weather and conditions permitting. The work has potential to cause odour at times in neighbouring suburbs due to the short-term disruption of landfill materials. The ACT Government apologises for any inconvenience. Waste management operators are working under strict protocols agreed with the ACT Environment Protection Authority to minimise odour where possible. These protocols include covering disrupted landfill at the end of each day, and postponing works around inclement weather (such as high wind and rainfall).

Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo

Street sweeping

Street sweeping continues with the regular weekly winter sweeping period in Garran and Hughes.

Underpass maintenance

Phillip: The cyclist and pedestrian underpass at Melrose Drive (between Brewer Street and Corinna Street) is temporarily closed for repair work. Two southbound lanes on Melrose Drive are also closed with a reduced speed limit. More information on the City Services website.

Weed control

Crews were weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Mowing obstacles in Isaacs, O'Malley, Rivett, Stirling and Waramanga.

Horticultural maintenance

Works were carried out in the following areas:

  • Laneways in Stirling and Weston.
  • Lyons.
  • Swinger Hill.

Graffiti removal

There were occasional lane closures for graffiti removal works on Tuggeranong Parkway (bridge under Cotter Road) on Thursday 11 July between 9:30 am and 4:00 pm.

Stormwater maintenance

North Weston Pond: Maintenance work is underway at the pond nearest to RSPCA. This work includes addressing degradation on the rock filled spillway to prevent further damage which occurs during major storm events. The water level will be lowered for the duration of the works which is expected to be approximately 2 months (weather permitting). During this time there is no access for pedestrians. Detour signage is in place.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo region. Below are the key updates for last week:

  • Woden Bus Depot: Construction is well underway on the new Woden Bus Depot with significant progress made on site since the second phase of works began in November 2022. In the coming months work will start to install additional traffic lights at the intersection of Athllon Drive and Shea Street to facilitate access in and out of the bus depot. Tree removal is also underway to facilitate these works.
  • Molonglo River Bridge: Works are progressing well on site, including excavation and filling work for the John Gorton Drive road corridor near the abutment on the south side of the river. Vegetation stripping has been completed for the abutment on the north side of the river while excavation for the Pier 2 footings continues on the north side of the river.
  • Streeton Drive intersection upgrades: Construction is underway. Heysen Street is closed at Streeton Drive for approximately 3 months (weather permitting).
